Flame graphs are a visualization of profiled software, allowing the most frequent code-paths to be identified quickly and accurately.

An introduction to flame graphs by their creator. They were introduced in 2011 and inspired the flame charts we know from Dev Tools (first used in Chrome/WebKit in 2013).
